Volunteers play an essential role at the Backside Learning Center. Our programs are completely volunteer run; the compassion, hard work, and dedication of our volunteers is what empowers the equine workers and families at the track.

Volunteering at the BLC is a great way to make a difference in the community, meet and learn about new people, and help our students learn important skills and feel at home.

To begin volunteering:

1. Read about our volunteer opportunities

Learn about BLC volunteer opportunities here: Volunteer Opportunities or contact our Communications Coordinator at nhawes@backsidelearningcenter.org or (502)-634-6543.

2. Complete a volunteer application

Apply to become a volunteer here or contact our Communications Coordinator for a paper copy at nhawes@backsidelearningcenter.org.

3. Attend a volunteer orientation and tour

Schedule and attend an orientation to learn about the BLC and the program you will be helping with. Orientations are held at the Backside Learning Center (located in the stable area of Churchill Downs) and at our satellite site.

To schedule an orientation, please contact our Communications Coordinator at nhawes@backsidelearningcenter.org.

4. Read the Volunteer Handbook, Program Guide Book, and complete necessary paperwork

Read the volunteer handbook to learn about the volunteer rules and guidelines, and complete any necessary paperwork.
